We need water to survive, so historically we were always settling close to sources of water (most, if not all major towns are close to river, lakes, springs or have access to a groundwater source through wells). Now, however we are many more than in the past, and contaminating water or overusing it to grow food or the goods we need. So maintaining and managing clean water sources become increasingly difficult and require more advanced skills than before.

So a star exploded many years ago, and stars have a lot of hydrogen in them. When the star exploded the hydrogen combined with the oxygen on earth and that is how we ended up with water. Water is essential for all living organisms on the planet.
