Water is really good at dissolving lots of different compounds. So water is made up of different molecules, hydrogen and oyxgen. Molecules can have electrical type charges so hydrogen and oxygen have opposite charges which means that anything you add to water has a good chance of reacting with at least one, of the hydrogens or oxygen.
