So sand is made up of rocks of many different types. It depends where you find or make the sand. Basically the rock has been broken up over time by wind or water or sun and breaks down into tiny particles. The sand in coastal areas can also be partly made up of the shells or skin of broken down fish and shellfish. Most sand is made up of silicon dioxide, calcium carbonate or aragonite.

Geologically speaking, to be sand, the grain must have a diameter ranging between 0.0625 and 2 mm.
