Hi there xmas46car, I decided that I wanted to become a PhD student in my final year of my undergraduate. I decided that I wanted to work on something that had an impact, pushed me (I like to challenge myself), something to do with the sea and renewable energy and had lots of Math!

I wanted to remain working in research and doing a PhD was pretty much the only way to stay in academia. I think a lot of things in academia need to change. In many parts of the world PhDs are paid and considered employees. In Ireland, PhDs are considered students, even though they produce research, work a full work week and teach at universities.
